Dental Bridges
At East Main Street Dental, we understand the impact that missing teeth can have on your daily life, affecting everything from your confidence to your ability to eat and speak. Dental bridges are a reliable and time-tested solution that we offer to fill the gaps in your smile, restore your dental functionality, and enhance your facial aesthetics.
Dental bridges are prosthetic devices anchored on existing teeth or implants to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap — these are called abutment teeth — and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are known as pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. The materials are selected to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal.
Types of Dental Bridges
We offer several types of dental bridges at East Main Street Dental, each designed to accommodate various dental needs and preferences:
- Traditional Bridges: These are the most common type of bridges and are made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. They involve creating a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the missing tooth, with a pontic in between.
- Cantilever Bridges: Used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
- Maryland Bonded Bridges: Also known as a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge, these are made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal or porcelain framework.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
- Restored Smile: Bridges restore your smile by filling the gap left by missing teeth.
- Improved Oral Functions: With bridges, you can chew and speak properly, as they restore the distribution of forces in your bite.
- Maintained Facial Shape: Bridges prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, which can distort the shape of your face.
- Durable Solution: Dental bridges are durable and can last many years with proper care, providing a cost-effective solution for missing teeth.
The Procedure
Getting a dental bridge usually requires at least two visits to our clinic. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared by recontouring these teeth and taking impressions of your teeth, which serve as a model from which the bridge, pontic, and crowns will be made. While your bridge is being crafted, you’ll be fitted with a temporary bridge to protect the exposed teeth and gums. During the second visit, your temporary bridge will be removed, and the new porcelain or metal bridge will be checked and adjusted to achieve a proper fit.
